Caledonia Falls

Exploring nature

Caledonia falls is one of the highest in Cyprus, and I began the trail near the presidential residence and hiked down along the Kyros river, it is one of the few streams that flow all year round. The hike took approximately 2 hours just to walk down, there was so much to see that it didn’t feel that long.

When you just want a totally different environment and get away from it all, Caledonia Falls is the place to be. It is located in Platres village at the Troodos mountain range and the trail that leads to the falls is about 3 km long. It is also a perfect hiking experience for a day out in the Cyprus mountains. It was fabulous observing different species of flora, textures and combined with the sound of running water, I was in my element, walking through the forest and identifying the native species of trees and shrubs.

Walking along the trail you tend to look down towards the sound of the water, but take a look up and look closer at the vegetation. Spring time at the Falls has many exciting landscapes.

At the beginning of the trail, impressive towering Pinus nigra – Black Pine. These pines are evergreen and are indigenous to the slopes of Troodos. They are long-living trees.

Crossing over the running water, feeling good being among everything nature provides.

Moss – Bryophyta

Amazing Moss – Bryophyta hugging the gabbro rocks.

Arabis purpurea – Cyprus rock cress – amazing beautiful specimen with the rocks and moss combination.

Pine combs laying on dry leaves,  the entire forest is full of textures.

Euphorbia veneris – Unusual and colourful.

Fern – Pteridium aquilinum

Hedera helix L – Ivy is a climbing evergreen shrub, Native to Cyprus, grows in moist areas along streams in Troodos.

Walking down the trail, root systems of the trees visible along the stream side.

Finally reaching the falls which are approximately 12 meters high, a small sanctuary of Cyprus natural environments.

Lovely experience, a great hike, well worth the trip and getting in touch with nature felt awesome. Take a trip, you’ll love it.
