Scapetacular Hammocks Cyprus

Social Commitment

At Scapetacular we support Cielo Hammocks who believe that understanding and appreciating where these hammocks & crafts come from is as important as your purchase.

With that in mind, we are committed to the social development of indigenous Mayans, especially Mayan women, who represent 90% of their weavers, all of which work from home. Working from home allows them to earn wages, avoid the cost and time of a commute to work and take care of young children at home.  The illiteracy rate is also very high and in some cases they only speak Mayan, not Spanish. This poses a major constraint for the commercialization of the Mayan Hammocks. This is where Scapetacular wants to join Cielo and help contribute people of Mexico with a sustainable business model. They continue to preserve the millenary tradition of hammock weaving while Cielo provides all the raw materials needed to build the hammocks and ship them to the final users. They currently have about 882 families of weavers in their network across the Yucatan.

The south of Mexico is the most impoverished region of the country and we are committed to help Cielo make a difference even if it’s just for a few hundred families. We are very proud of our effort and contribution for the improvement lives of others.

The men and women they employ as weavers, work on the hammocks in order to supplement their family income. Since weaving is done at home, at their own individual schedules, working conditions are far better than working at a factory or in the fields. This work model allows them to weave their hammocks and take care of their children at the same time. Working at their own pace allows them to freedom to take a day off if necessary. When they have finished weaving the hammocks, they are picked up from their home. This model allows production to be a very family friendly job.

This Award winning Business concept is called SHE Network (Sustainable Holistic Empowerment Network) for Social Impact and Social Entrepreneurship. This fully integrated model creates a symbiotic relationship where we help and mutually benefit from improved living conditions of their weavers.

All the hammocks are carefully inspected and go through a process of quality control and standardization.

We hope that you have enjoyed a little insight of where our hammocks come from and help you understand about the ancient art of Mayan hammocks and people who make it possible!
