Leucaena is an overlooked evergreen tree, it is drought tolerant and fast growing in a suitable environment. Its leaves are a pretty pattern and texture, with a flower which is dense and has a globular cluster that resembles a pompon. The white Popinac flowers between May – June and a second time later in the year. It’s used for streetscapes and has an ornamental value when kept in shape.  This species can also be used for a natural planting design.

Leucaena leucocephala is native to Central America and was introduced to Cyprus as animal fodder for horses and livestock feed, but also as firewood. The grounded seeds are used as a substitute for coffee in many countries for instance Mexico. The white Popinac can be planted in many soils as it tolerates most soils as long as it is well drained. It is considered invasive in certain parts of the world.  If trained and maintained it will give pleasure as an ornamental tree or used as a hedge or living fence.
